This year's Florida group is eerily similar to another college basketball team in the late 90's: the 97-98, and 98-99 Arizona Wildcats. Back in 97-98, the Cats had that great lineup of: Mike Bibby, Miles Simon, Mike Dickerson, with Jason Terry off the bench. However, all those guys were youngsters, and that first year for that group was supposed to be the year they improved and gelled, with the next year to win it all and be dominant. Regular season in 97-98, they played well, but not great, as expected. Tourney? NO ONE picked them to do anything, and they romped through the tourney, dominating everyone, and beat an incredibly strong, and experienced, 97-98 Kentucky team to win it all. Next year, of course, since all the Zona soph's and freshman became Soph's and Juniors, everyone picked them #1. What happened? 98-99 they flamed out before the final four.
Fast forward to 05-06 Florida. 4 great soph's everyone expects them before the year starts to be 'that year where they do good, but gel, before they actually dominate and do any real damage.' Regular season: they do just that, playing very good, but not great, ball in the SEC. Tourney? They romped through all opposition, and beating, just like the young Wildcats did to Kentucky 8 years back, a more experienced UCLA team (although that team wasnt nearly as good as that 97-98 Kentucky team that had Mercer, Padgett and Mohammad).
Now, of course, since all 4 of Florida's super soph's are back for junior year, all the stars are alligned for them to repeat. They have the best on paper lineup in the country, the best chemistry in the country, and everyone is picking them to be #1 next year and be repeat winners of the tourney. And that is exactly why they wont...its that inexplicable rule of NCAA basketball, that the teams that have the most talent and should win, almost never do. They always have great regular seasons, and then dont make it to the final four come tourney time, and are never remembered after they flame out. Hence us not hearing much these days about those mid 90's Kansas teams that had 4 NBA guys in their lineup (J Vaughn, P Pierce, R. Lafrentz, S. Pollard)...or that UNC team of Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, Ed Cota and Shammond Williams...two of the best college teams ever assembled in the 90's, that lost 2-3 total games in the regular season, and never made it to the final four come tournament time. My prediction: Florida is ranked #1-3 all season, and loses in round 2 or the sweet 16 to mediocrity ;-)
