You're friend is absolutely correct: Gerry McNamara is not an NBA caliber talent. Maybe he'll make it, but only as a Paul Shirley 12th man type role. He'd only be brought in to shoot threes...and even guys already in the NBA like that (Jason Kapono, Matt Frejie, Damon Jones, Kyle Korver) are far, FAR more talented then McNamara in having an overall better set of skills, understanding of the game, and athletic ability. Gerry McNamara was a talented, but in no way shape or form dominant college basketball player, and there are about 20382103892032 guys from NCAA and Euroleague ball that deserve a shot over Gerry in the NBA.
I also think it is not the smartest move to give up 200,000 dollars to play on what's basically one of the "New York Yankees" type franchises in Europe, and pick up invaluable experience towards learning a more team oriented, smart kind of basketball...to make 18,000 dollars a year so you can get more playing time on crappy NBDL team. He should have waited the year out and see if he could crack the rotation in Greece.
