Default Selling question: bulk vs. pieces

Random curiosity on this one...wondering if, when selling 20 and more derivatives at one time, if sellers have had better success either in completing all the sales, or of a quicker sell rate, if they sell them all at once in one price order, or constantly split them up into little groups.

i.e.: If a person had 40 shares of team X, they've increased in price from whatever starting point to 20.00, and I'm looking to sell all of them, would I be wiser to:

A. List one sell order of all 40 for 20.00

B. Split them in groups (5 for 19.50, 10 for 20.00, 15 for 20.20, etc.)...so as to lead quasi manupilate the price towards where you want.

I am wondering if when people post sell orders of 50 and higher, if that ever causes a lack of people to buy, as they might wonder why the seller is "panicking" and cause them not to actually buy and wait for a lower price. Any comments/opinions would be most welcome.

Hey Philly. I have personally noticed that in general people do not like the selling in bulk approach. I went to sell 40 of my LPGA stocks in one particular person and no one bought them until i broke it up into 3 different sales. However I prefer to Buy in bulk. If i find a stock thats a good deal...i want to grab as many as i can in one process but i think thats because Im lazy and dont want to type in my prices and push process multiple times. lol

Looks to me Dew has it right on. As a seller, people freak out a bit and dont like to touch big orders.

But if I am buying, let me buy the whole thing in one shot if I could. It is weird. People are odd.

My experience as well...if you post a sell order for a large number of shares, people will rush to underbid you because the feel they won't sell, instead of just collecting the divs from your transactions (go figure). It's actually good if you want to buy more of that share, I place a large order all or nothing, and scoop who's getting below..

As far as buying is concerned, you can place a big buy order several dollars below current market price, and you have a good chance to get it too...
